Thanksgiving

Hello, Hello! I'm sorry that I've been gone for SO long. This last semester of nursing school has really just taken up ALL of my time. Anyhow, I'm back now and I wanted to get this out for Thanksgiving, aka: the beginning of the most magical time of the year!

So last year I changed up our table decorations a little. I used navy blue napkins, the blue and gold plates that have tiny fruits painted on them, and dark browns and oranges in the center to bring in the fall feeling. I think it turned out okay... What do you think?

ps. Sorry the picture isn't that great... I was rushing to get my mini pumpkin pies out of the oven!

So yes, I made individual pumpkin pies for everyone so we wouldn't have to worry about cutting and passing, as if it was really that big of a deal to cut and pass. Mini pumpkin pies just seemed so cute and I wanted to come up with an easy way to do it. So, here's what I did...

On rolled out pie dough, I drew circles, about 1-1.5 inches larger than my muffin pan circles. I lightly powdered the muffin pans with flour (this helps the dough not stick to the pans when removing them) and neatly stuffed each little circle with the dough and filled that with the pie filling. From here I used the extra dough to cut out little designs to add a little something-something to the mini pumpkin pies. I used the mini cookie cutters from William Sonoma (you can see how much I love these cut-outs below). Oh, and before cooking with pies I sprinkled a mixture of 1 part flour and 1 part sugar over the top of the pie crusts and little leaf cut-outs (this helps prevent the edges of the pie from turning brown and overly crunchy).

I got so excited to use the mini cookie cutters that I made a whole other pie so I could use the leaves as a boarder. Cute huh? Too bad I used a pie crust protector, instead of my fool proof flour and sugar mixture, because the edges got a little too brown and crispy. Silly me, tricks are for keeping!

Candy Bouquet

I recently saw a picture of a candy bouquet online and it really got me to thinking of all the different ways someone could make one of these sweet little ditties! I don't know if I would necessarily use one for a wedding, but I think they would be so cute and very easy to make for a bachelorette party, birthday party, some sort of recital or achievement, or...well... you get what I'm trying to say.

So... here are some of the ideas I found online. I could believe there were not very many of these out there. Why are these not more popular?

The most whimsical of it's kind, the true lollipop bouquet...

The flower tissue lollipop bouquet. Can you see the lollipops hidden in the center of the flowers? They add a little something sweet to the mix. I would imagine you just take a topiary ball, cut some tissue paper, stick lollipops through the center of the flower cut outs , and stick them into the ball (possibly with some glue, maybe?)

Now, I realize this is a topiary, but couldn't it just just as easy to take this thing out of the pot and have it be a bouquet? The small accents of tissue paper and the large bow on the bottom really kick it up a notch! This one seems even more simple than the last! Just push the lollipops straight into the topiary ball, glue or stick in some tissue, tie on a bow and wha-la... a sweet bouquet!

I'd be too afraid to hold this one in fear that I would break it! How pretty are those sugar flowers though?!? Bet this one took a little longer to put together than the others.

And now... introducing the most unique bouquet of the all... the ice cream cone candy marshmallow bouquet! Is your mouth drooling? Mine is! So uniques, so pretty, and so tasty all at the same time! Love this little concoction!

Birthday Box

How do you turn an ordinary shoe box into a quick and easy birthday gift box? Especially when it says 'ballet flats' and the gift is for a guy?!?

Grab some construction paper, fun marker or pen, stick glue, scissors, and roll of ribbon!

To do:
1. Cut the construction paper to the shape you want (just make sure it is large enough to cover the entire logo... in this case J.Crew).
2. Measure your ribbon. I usually cut a little extra just in case it ties funny and I can cut off my mistakes instead of having to use a whole other cut of ribbon and waste just that much more.
3. Glue the pater materials together and write your message (I doubled the message as my card as well).
4. Lay the materials on the box as you would like them to appear, then glue the ribbon to the back of the paper card, and finally glue the whole set (back of card and ribbon underneath the card) over your box logo.
5. Whip the remaining ribbon around the rest of the box, tie, and wha-la! Quick and easy gift box!

The only thing left from here is for my brother to untie the ribbon, open the box, and be surprised! He won't even know, unless he reads this I guess, that the box originally had a logo and the words ballet flats on top. You could call me very very sneaky, but I prefer resourceful or creative!

Bow Cupcakes Part II

After my last post about edible bows cupcakes Ibegan to think of the those of us who don't always have enough time to whip up perfectly sculpted sugar bows. Don't get me wrong they are beautiful and I'm sure very delicious, but some times when a quick little extra something is needed to complete the look I usually find myself looking through spools of ribbon or fabric. They're quick, easy, sugar free, and dishwasher friendly! :)

A fabric bow-knot topper...

Preppy bow tie toppers...

A little bow tied or glued to the side of the cupcake liner...

A cupcake cut-out topper on a cupcake with a bow (man that's a mouth full)...

Or maybe a bow tied around a single cupcake stand...

Or as the ever clever Amy Atlas would do it: decorate the cake stands with ribbon, paper cutouts, and a little bow to tie it all together...

Bow Cupcakes

Psst... here's a peak into my thought process and how this post came about... "I could really go for a cupcake right now. {Window shopping} Ooo, those are cute shoes. Would be even better with a bow. Lots of things are better with bows. I should make a cupcake with a bow. Oooo! Bow around it. No, wait, bow on top. And made out of sugar. I need to google this."

So here's some of the best of what I found in my search for bow cupcake greatness...

Short, dark, and dreamy...

The perfect fit...

Big and pink...

Multicolored and look the most like real ribbons...

Bedazzled...

And, who's the leader of the them all... Minnie! How stinkin' cute is this cupcake?!?...

Room Renovation

So I've been wanting to redo my room for quite a while and now, given the opportunity, I'm jumping on it! Here is the fabric that got things rolling...

Pottery Barn must have known I was coming when they mixed all the colors I was working with into this pattern. The golds, smokey blues, greens (always a fav), a little red with smudges of musky pinks... couldn't have mixed it better myself.

So a little background... the room was already painted a light smokey blue at this point and I was needing to incorporate the furniture that was already in the room (white wicker bed side tables, a shelf stand, a white and gold bed frame, and a green lamp shade which I refused to toss because I still think it's darling).

Here's a little something I put together today to help keep my organized and incorporate my golds...

I realize it doesn't look like much but it's a huge improvement from the thin and boring hobby lobby wood panels on the outside of this dry erase board. I think this large gold frame better suits my taste and new room!

To do:
1. Pry apart/ off the old wood paneling.
2. Measure the inside of the frame you're wanting to use.
3. Transfer those measurements to the back side of the dry erase board.
4. get to sawing (yes, I literally sawed the thing in half. I'm sure there are better and easier ways but I was too impatient to wait. I wanted this thing done now!).
5. Clean from of dry erase board and position into the frame.
6. Glue that sucker into place and allow glue to dry.
7. Hang your new work of art!

Here it is with the rest of my desk/ study area (which is still a work in progress because those selves are just not working for me right now)...

Put on your party hat!

A few days ago I helped a good friend of mine prep for her birthday party. She wanted to make cupcakes for dessert and cupcake balls for party favors! What a fun idea! I don't think I've given out party favors at one of my birthday parties for years; probably since they came in a princess plastic bag filled with dollar store goodies! I think this is something I need to implement back into my parties. Anywho, back to the baking...

After a glass, or two, of champagne I thought it would be super cute to try something other than balls on the top of the pops. I guess a little champagne gets my thoughts bubbling! {Insert courtesy laugh here} Corny, I know, but there may be some truth to it. So... we tried party hats! We thought that would be simple enough. Here's our attempt...

The pink rimmed ones were chocolate and the white were vanilla! We used a sicklette on top for a little extra flair!

Ps. Please note the super cute candy bar in the back ground my friend has set up in her kitchen! This is just another idea that I will be incorporating into my life! I can't help but be inspired by her!

Here was the final presentation...

They fit perfectly into the napkin rings at dinner! Let the celebration begin!

Here's to a new year

Another year has come and gone and I am now one year closer to 30, according to my driver's license at least. I don't really feel like I should be this close to such an age milestone, but then again I don't think I'd want to go back a year or two. At one of my birthday dinners this year an ever so thoughtful friend brought some flowers to decorate our table for the evening! Such a good idea! It just made the whole ambiance of the celebration have so much more of a personal touch that I just loved it! I think I'm going to try and start doing this for special occasion dinners!

Anywho, here's a picture of my flowers... Not the best photo given that I was driving to Austin and I refused to leave these beautiful flowers behind to die. And they were my birthday flowers, so that had to celebrate the rest of my birthday with me, right?!

Sugar filled mini

I know it's been a while since I last posted... HUGE apologies from me. I've thrown myself into work and when I haven't been there I've pretty much been out of town. I'm trying to take advantage of this whole "summer off" thing!

Here's something I little threw together for a co-workers baby shower about a month ago. I had originally planned to do cake balls with bright pink sugar crystals and attach a little paper cutout on the pop stick to make them look like shiny pink rattles, but I was having one of those days where nothing was working the way it should. SO.... Here's what I ended up with...

You can see that I ended up with a few pink sugar-coated cake balls but I didn't have enough. Frustration had set in but I wasn't going to let it get the best of me. I search for anything else pink and found pink strawberry flavored marshmallows and and sour skittles (which are actually red but I didn't have a lot to work with at this point). So, using the rest of the melted white chocolate, I dipped the marshmallow tops into the chocolate, made a little swirl on top with a spoon, and adorned the top with a skittle.

I'll post more pictures of the individually decorated marshmallows and cake balls when I can find the cord that connects my camera to my computer!

Now whats a birthday party without some cake and candy, right?!? Look at these adorable candy-inspired goodies!

Rock candy cake! I need to make ones of these asap. It seems like one of those things where it only looks like you spent hours and hours working on it, but really it took you about 5 minutes! Now thats my kind of entertaining! Don't be surprised if I show up with one of these at the next get-together!

This super talented lady made everything, yes everything, from the table stand to the HAND SEWN cupcakes, cakes, and sign! I don't know about you... but this DIY may be a little far fetched for most of us, but more power to you sister if you can stitch up this masterpiece!

Memorial Day Table

Memorial Day is just around the corner! Hope your weekend involves something fun, or relaxing, or both! Enjoy your time off! And don't forget to remember and thank those that help serve and protect our country!

I'm trying to figure out how I could incorporate some of these ideas into my Memorial Day weekend celebration! I'm loving the stripes in these tables settings!

American flag! Classic!

Table cloths...

no clue who this is by... been on my computer for a while now.

Tin can covers & napkin rings...

Setting decoration or place card...

Berrylicious

Berry season couldn't come at a more perfect time... considering it's also time to fit into those polka dot bikinis! Here are some super yummie desserts that can satisfy your sweet tooth while not packing on tons of extra calories!

A slice of angel food cake topped with lite whipped cream and fresh cut berries (I used strawberries and blueberries)! Light and heavenly for a little something sweet!

To knock the calories down even more, cut out the angel food cake and add swirl of honey and a dash of cinnamon sugar on top of the lite whipped cream! I love this dessert! It's really great for those who are training for things like triathlons or marathons because you get your sweet fix without undoing your hard work! Some extra added bonuses, berries are packed with nutrients that help your face have that healthy glow and they give you a little extra boost of energy all while slimming down or toning up your waist line! Who wouldn't want that?!
